Understanding Coverage for Your Dental Expenses
If you have dental insurance through your employer, you’re likely wondering what the most effective method is for using it. When you have dental insurance benefits, your care does not only become more predictable, but you can get many of your most essential services paid for upfront. Of course, we’re always here to ensure you maximize them to the fullest and get the best value possible. Here’s what you should know.
Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Not all insurance plans are created equal, but what’s even more important is recognizing that dental insurance is not synonymous with medical insurance. For example, medical insurance is generally meant to be used when a serious issue occurs, like an illness or injury. Dental insurance should be used routinely, which is why routine forms of care (i.e. exams, cleanings, X-rays) are often covered by dental insurance plans. The result? Fewer dental emergencies and better long-term oral health!
What Your Dental Insurance Covers
Most dental insurance plans cover specific types of treatment up until a certain percentage. Every plan has its own unique stipulations to consider, but most plans will cover treatments in the following way as broken down below:
Preventive Care – Exams, cleanings and X-rays are considered preventive care and are covered at or close to 100 percent.
Minor Restorative Care – dental fillings and often times root canal therapy are considered minor restorative care and often see 70 to 80 percent coverage from insurance.
Major Restorative Care – crowns, bridges and dentures are considered major restorative treatments and usually receive up to 50 percent coverage.
